Greater Lawrence Rowing had a great showing at USRowing Youth National Championships in early June. The women’s varsity 4+ qualified to attend the regatta after placing in a petitionable 4th place finish at Northeast Youth Districts Regatta at the end of May. The girls finished less than two seconds behind the 3rd place finisher, which was well within the margin to petition for a bid to nationals.
The girls went into nationals weekend unseeded, as they qualified via petition. After the time trial, the girls were seeded 13th overall in the 21-boat spread. This seeded the girls 3rd in a repechage where they needed to place in the top 2 spots in order to make it to a semi-final the next day. After a valiant race, the girls upset the competition and placed 1st in their rep, giving them a guaranteed finish in either the A or the B final on Sunday.
The girls faced a competitive field in their race on Saturday morning. They placed 6th in their semi-final which advanced them to the B final on Sunday afternoon.
After competitive times in the time trials and repechage, the girls were seeded last in the B final. Behind very quick crews from Asheville and Nobles, the girls were in a battle for 3rd with Bainbridge Island, another crew who petitioned for a bid to nationals. In the last few strokes of an exciting race, the GLR girls placed 10th in the country.
Congratulations to the athletes in this boat who worked hard all season and had impressive results at The Head of the Charles, New Hampshire Championships, Amber Zapatka Memorial Regatta, and Northeast Youth Districts. In the boat were rowers Cat Gervais, Emma Gossman, Hayden Bronson, Ashley Surette, and coxswain Emma Calnan.
